With the exhibition project DESIGN × SCIENCE, the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava presents a new platform for dialogue between design research and science. During Milan Design Week, the We Will Design 2024 exhibition will be held at the BASE Milano Experimental Laboratory from 16 – 21 April 2024. The PhD projects use scientific knowledge and highlight new possibilities for the design profession. Vladimír Boroň, František Dorko, Petra Hurai, Vlasta Kubušová, Filip Maukš, Martin Mjartan, Martin Sombathy and Lucia Suchá are exploring a wide range of themes that are linked by interdisciplinary collaboration and the search for new positions for architecture and design.
In the face of accelerating polycrisis, DESIGN × SCIENCE poses questions worth exploring:
How to make efficient use of accumulating industrial waste?
How to collaborate with artificial intelligence models for the benefit of human creativity?
How to design ‚with time‘?

Trimtab | Prototyping Change
„The DESIGN × SCIENCE exhibition at Milan Design Week is a call to action. We believe that scientific research – supported by design and applied in practice – can actively contribute to prototyping the change we so badly need to see in the world today,“ sums up Michala Lipkova, curator and producer of the exhibition. The aim of the collaborative platform Trimtab (tr1mtab.com), founded and developed by Michala Lipková at the Institute of Design FAD STU since 2018, is to actively search for new industrial partnerships and accelerate technology transfer through design research and multidisciplinary collaboration with industry as well as between STU faculties. The name of the platform is inspired by the metaphor of the „miniature rudder“, often used by the American architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller to illustrate the multiplier effect of small changes that can affect even the largest systems. The „prototyping change“ in the platform’s name communicates the idea of contributing to positive change through the designer’s input into science and technology projects, in the spirit of „Fullerian“ systems thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration.
